Our Story

Hi, I’m Zoe the founder of Butter Nut of London and a life-long crunchy peanut butter addict.


Before starting Butter Nut, I was working as a camera assistant in the film industry.  After 4 years of making other people’s dreams come true, I felt it was time to follow my own.

 


Inspired by my mother, who at the time was running a small food business with a friend, I decided to make that perennial favourite of mine; peanut butter.


My boyfriend’s parents are in the coffee business and when it comes to ethical sourcing of ingredients, they are pioneers. 30 years ago, they successfully lobbied the Australian government to bring Fairtrade to Australia. I knew that if I was going to set up a food business, my products had to be made from the finest ethically and sustainably sourced ingredients.


Butter Nut of London was born.


I am an adventurous cook and love to experiment. At home I have loads of cook books from around the world. I channelled this passion for exploration and alchemy into my business by making unusual and innovative varieties of nut butters. My creativity in the kitchen has paid off as the majority of my nut butters have won Great Taste Awards.


Sport is a big part of my life (martial arts, cycling, running, yoga, skiing & sailing) and my nut butters had to fit in with my healthy lifestyle. All of my nut butters are chock full of protein and healthy fats. They are free from palm oil, refined sugar, additives preservatives and gluten. My ingredients, except for salt which is a non-living compound, are organic. Each and every one of my nut butters is vegan so that everyone can enjoy them.


Butter Nut is not my first business. Straight out of university I set up a digital magazine about B-boying/breaking (breakdancing) and took part in the Prince’s Trust Enterprise Scheme. On completion of the course I worked for a year as a Young Ambassador for the Trust.


Once Butter Nut was launched, it quickly outgrew my home kitchen.  Unwilling to sell shares at such an early stage and uncomfortable with taking on debt, I still to this day do not have a credit card, I worked for free for almost a year two days a week for a catering company in Tooting. In exchange I was able to use their professional kitchen in the evenings and at weekends to make my nut butters.


In this way I have been able to bootstrap Butter Nut to multiple Great Taste awards and my own shop at the world-famous Borough Market.


As Butter Nut grows, we stay true to our roots. I source all of our ingredients from organic and sustainable farmers and we handcraft all of our products in small batches.


Butter Nut nut butters are that little bit of delicious, ethical luxury to add a little magic to your breakfasts, snacks and meals. Nutty feasts for the mouth, body and soul.
